A glacial valley at the heart of the Accursed Mountains.
The Valbona Valley, in Tropojë, is the eastern gateway to the Albanian Alps (Bjeshkët e Nemuna) — a wide glacial valley of braided river, beech forest and limestone peaks, and one end of the country's most famous hike.
The Theth–Valbona trail
The day-long crossing between Valbona and Theth, over a pass around 1,800 m, is the best-known trek in Albania, walked by thousands each summer. Valbona Valley National Park protects the upper valley, with peaks topping 2,500 m near Maja Jezercë, the highest summit entirely within Albania.
Mountain hospitality
Local families run guesthouses (bujtina) on the old kulla-and-farmhouse pattern, serving their own dairy, honey and rakia. The valley empties in winter and fills in summer; June to September is the season.
Half the reason people come to the north starts or ends in this valley.
