About POGRADEC

A city worth slowing down for.

Pogradec sits on the western shore of Lake Ohrid, the deepest and one of the oldest lakes in Europe. The town's pace is set by the lake — fishermen at dawn, families on the lungomare at dusk, and tavernas serving Koran trout that's been on the menu for centuries.

It's 2h 30m from Tirana via the A3 motorway, makes a natural pairing with North Macedonia's side of Ohrid, and works as a quieter summer alternative to the Riviera.

History & culture

An ancient lake, an even older village.

Pogradec sits on the Albanian shore of Lake Ohrid — one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — beside Lin, where archaeologists have documented one of the oldest settlements in Europe.

Lake Ohrid

Ohrid is a 'living fossil' lake, home to endemic species found nowhere else, including the prized koran (Ohrid trout) that defines the local table. The lakeside promenade, the Drilon springs and the village of Tushemisht are the gentle pleasures of a Pogradec stay.

Deep history at Lin

On the Lin peninsula, archaeologists have found a prehistoric stilt-house settlement thought to be among the oldest in Europe — well over 8,000 years old — alongside early-Christian church mosaics. Pogradec's own castle and the monumental tombs of Lower Selca add further layers.

A quiet lake town with one of the longest human stories in Europe behind it.
