The road where the mountains drop into the Ionian.
The Llogara Pass climbs to over 1,000 m through a national park of black pine, then plunges to the Riviera beaches below — the single most dramatic stretch of road in Albania and the gateway between Vlorë and the south.
A strategic gateway
Llogara has been a chokepoint for armies for two thousand years; Julius Caesar is said to have crossed it pursuing Pompey. The modern switchback road links the Adriatic plain around Vlorë with the Ionian Riviera at Palasë and Dhërmi, and the descent — with the sea suddenly spread out below — is unforgettable.
The national park
Llogara National Park protects wind-sculpted pine forest (the bent 'flag pines'), alpine meadow and big views. It is a favourite for paragliding off the pass, short forest walks, and a cool lunch before the drop to the beaches.
Most people rush over it to reach the coast. The pass itself is the highlight.
