The sacred mountain above Berat.
Mount Tomorr is the great massif towering over Berat — a national park, the highest peak of central Albania, and the most important pilgrimage site shared by the country's Bektashi Muslims and Orthodox Christians alike.
A holy peak
In folk tradition the mountain is a giant, Baba Tomorr. Each August thousands climb to the Bektashi tekke near the summit for the pilgrimage to Abbas Ali, one of the largest religious gatherings in Albania, defined by sacrificial feasts and shared meals.
The national park
Mount Tomorr National Park protects beech and black-pine forest, deep ravines and a high karst plateau, with wolves, golden eagles and chamois on the heights. Trails climb from the tekke and from the villages on the Berat side.
A natural landmark and a spiritual one — Albania's sacred mountain.
