Albania's Grand Canyon, cut into the southern hills.
The Osum Canyon, near Skrapar in the Berat region, is the deepest and most spectacular river canyon in Albania — walls of limestone carved by the Osum river, best known for spring rafting.
The gorge
Over roughly 13 km the Osum has cut a narrow gorge through the rock, with waterfalls, side-slots and pools. April and May, when snowmelt swells the river, are the rafting and canyoning season; by late summer the water drops and parts of the canyon floor can be walked.
Around the canyon
The Skrapar highlands around it are wild and little-visited — known for raki, mountain villages and the road climbing toward Mount Tomorr. The Bogovë waterfall and the Osum springs are nearby stops.
Come in spring for the water; come any time for the rock.
