History & culture
A coastal lagoon kept for the pelicans.
The Karavasta Lagoon, inside Divjakë-Karavasta National Park on the Adriatic plain, is the largest lagoon in Albania and home to one of the last breeding colonies of the curly Dalmatian pelican in the Mediterranean.
A Ramsar wetland
Separated from the sea by a long sandbar, Karavasta is a mosaic of brackish water, salt-marsh and umbrella-pine forest — a Ramsar-listed wetland of international importance and a stopover on the Adriatic flyway for tens of thousands of birds. The Dalmatian pelican colony is the symbol of the park.
Visiting
Wooden walkways, a visitor area and boat trips reach the pelican islands and the pine forest of Divjakë without disturbing the birds. It is an easy detour off the Durrës–Vlorë road, best in spring and autumn for birdlife.
One of the Mediterranean's great pelican refuges, an hour from the beach resorts.
