Lake Koman is a narrow reservoir on the Drin in the northern highlands, where a daily passenger ferry threads between sheer cliffs in what is often called one of the world's great boat journeys.
The lake was created by the Koman hydropower dam in the 1980s, flooding the Drin gorge. The ferry between Koman and Fierzë runs its length — past walls of rock, hanging villages and side-valleys reachable only by water. It is the classic link in the loop between Shkodër, Valbona and Theth.
For the villages along the shore the ferry is not an attraction but the road, carrying people, livestock and supplies to places with no land access. Travelling with them is the point; the scenery is the bonus.
