A hilltop monastery where Skanderbeg was married.
The Ardenica Monastery, on a low hill above the Myzeqe plain near Fier, is one of Albania's most important Orthodox monasteries — a Byzantine foundation famous as the site of the 1451 wedding of the national hero Skanderbeg.
The monastery
Founded in 1282 under the Byzantine emperor Andronikos II, the complex centres on the church of St Mary, rebuilt in the 18th century and covered inside with frescoes by the Zografi brothers of Korçë — among the masterpieces of Albanian post-Byzantine painting. A smaller church of the Holy Trinity stands alongside.
Skanderbeg's wedding
Tradition holds that Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg married Donika Arianiti at Ardenica in 1451, binding two great Albanian houses during the resistance against the Ottomans. The quiet cloister now operates partly as a guesthouse.
A working monastery, a frescoed church, and a chapter in the life of the national hero.
