The Mat valley, north of Tirana around the town of Burrel, is King Zog's home country — a green landscape of reservoirs, hill villages and old bridges that sees very few visitors. An easy day out from the capital or from nearby Krujë.

A day in Mat
A walk through Burrel to get your bearings, then the linked Ulëz and Shkopet lakes in their nature park — easy lakeside walks and a lunch of flija and mountain dairy. In the afternoon the stone village of Guri i Bardhë, the old Maiden's Bridge over the Mat, and the ruins of Burgajet castle, where King Zog was born.
