3 daysSouthTravellers drawn to Byzantine churches and a quiet valley.
Dropull is the string of villages spread across the Drino valley south of Gjirokastër, an area shaped by its Greek-speaking minority and a remarkable density of old churches and monasteries. Three days of frescoes, a Roman theatre and quiet mountain corners, with the stone city as your base.
Day 1
Derviçan & the churches
Down the Drino to Derviçan, the valley's largest village, with its post-Byzantine church of Saint Mary, the 1588 monastery at Dhuvjan and the frescoed church of Saint Nicholas. Gjirokastër, the UNESCO stone city, is the natural base.
The Roman theatre of Hadrianopolis at Sofratikë, raised under the emperor it is named for, the eleventh-century church at Upper Peshkëpi that was once a bishop's seat, and the forty-metre Selcë waterfall up in the Pogon.
Day 3
Villages & lakes
The church of Saint Mary at Zervat below Mount Drianos, the quiet Pepeli lake, and the forest villages of Koshovicë and Sotira — beech and chestnut woods, the ruins of Selos castle, and a table of homemade local food.
